Silencers
First let's get into a little history behind the silencer. It was invented by Hiram P. Maxim, son of the inventor of the Maxim Machine gun, Hiram S. Maxim, in the early 1900s. At the same time, he used much of this same technology to develop the muffler for automobile engines. Mr. Maxim named his device the Maxim Silencer and that over time gave way to them just being called "silencers". There are now many different types of silencers, but the general design of most remain very similar. A system of baffles and chambers direct the gasses that result from firing a gun. This redirection allows the gas to slow as well as cool down before it exits, noticeably reducing the sound signature of the weapon. At the same time, the recoil or kick of the gun, as well as the muzzle flash are drastically reduced. |
