The Harrier "jump jet," the first jet capable of taking off and landing vertically, was designed in the 1960s as a plane that could take off from anywhere and avoid needing a large runway and base to support its operation. The aircraft is a subsonic fighter used primarily for ground attack missions, but is capable of defending itself in air to air combat. It is/was used by the British Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and Italian Navy. I introduce to you the father of vertical takeoff, the Harrier!
