This week’s edition of #PlanePorn highlights the Lockheed Martin F117 Nighthawk, the first plane designed around stealth technology. Stealth is technology that allows objects to become less visible to radar, sonar, infrared or a combination of those things, this is the reason for the planes very unusual shape. The plane designed by Lockheed Martin’s division “skunk works” achieved its first flight in 1981, but was not acknowledged by the U.S. government until 1988. The F-117 was in every major conflict between its IOC and when it was retired in 2008 due to the F-22 and the cost to operate such an airplane. This airplane was truly groundbreaking in terms of technology and propelling the U.S. further ahead in aviation.
